Maxim's DS28C40 DeepCover Authenticator, Now at Mouser, Protects Automotive Data Security

The DS28C40 provides a core set of cryptographic tools derived from integrated asymmetric (ECC-P256) and symmetric (SHA-256) security functions. The device integrates a FIPS/NIST true random number generator (TRNG), 6 kbits of one-time programmable (OTP) memory for user data, keys and certificates, one configurable GPIO, and a unique 64-bit ROM identification number (ROM ID). The ECC public/private key capabilities operate from the NIST defined P-256 curve and include FIPS 186-4 compliant ECDSA signature generation and verification to support a bidirectional asymmetric key authentication model. The SHA-256 secret-key capabilities are compliant with FIPS 180 and allow flexibility when used either in conjunction with ECDSA operations or independently for multiple HMAC functions. Authentication algorithms built into the IC eliminate device-level development of code, while the industry-standard I²C interface and low software overhead on the host side help simplify design integration.

As an AEC-Q100 Grade 1 solution for automotive systems, this authenticator IC reduces the design complexity and software vulnerability of current approaches to ensure only genuine components are used for many electronic systems, such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and electric vehicle (EV) batteries. Other applications include IoT node crypto-protection, secure authentication of accessories and peripherals, secure storage of cryptographic keys for a host controller, and secure boot or download of firmware and/or system parameters.
